DERBY RULES

Vehicle construction and safety:

Gravity-powered: Your vehicle must be powered solely by gravity and the push from your pit crew at the start. No engines, batteries, or other external energy sources are allowed.

Four wheels: The car must have at least four functional wheels.

Brakes and steering: The car needs fully functional and independently operated brakes. These brakes must act on a minimum of two wheels on the same axle. A working steering system is also required.

Size and weight limits: A maximum size of 12 feet long, 6 feet wide, and 7 feet tall. It must also have a minimum of 7 inches of ground clearance and a maximum weight of 175 lbs, excluding the driver.

Safety features: The driver and any passengers must be able to escape the cockpit easily. Sharp edges are not permitted.

Prohibited items: Pyrotechnics, smoke canisters, and any other devices that could cause a dangerous track are not allowed.


Judging criteria: Teams are judged on three factors:

Creativity and design: The uniqueness and artistic quality of the vehicle's theme.

Showmanship: The team's performance or skit at the start of the race.

Speed: The time it takes to navigate the course.

Team size: A maximum of 5 members, with no more than two who may push the car at the start line.

Helmets: The driver and any co-drivers must wear a helmet.

Push-start rules: The pit crew can only push the soapbox until the starting line. Once across the line, the driver is on their own.

Course completion:
The driver must cross the finish line while still in the vehicle for the run to count
